Soulful.
Introspective.
Socially conscious.
These are just a few of the words that can be used to describe singer/songwriter Melissa Mitchell. Her latest album
Alma is an eclectic mix of songs that takes the listener through the highs and lows of life’s journey. To Melissa, writing and creating music is a healing process; and she passes the fruits of her labor on to fans hoping it can be a means for them to heal as well.
The album’s name, also Melissa’s middle name, translates to “soul” in Spanish and is at the root of all her work, musical and otherwise.
The Alaskan native doesn’t just use her albums to reach out to the masses. Melissa latches on the charitable aspects of music as well. She opened for Michael Franti
in a nationally broadcast concert at Folsom
Prison in addition to a benefit concert for
the Inside Circle Foundation; both of which she describes as life-changing experiences that have deepened her sense of purpose.
Melissa is also involved with a number of charitable organizations including Alaska Children’s Services and Challenge Alaska. Melissa, who once even considered joining the Peace Corps, will lend her talents to
the compilation CD, Alaskan Women Songwriters for Peace, with the proceeds going to local charities such as the Mary Magdalene Foundation and STAR (Standing Together Against Rape).
Ani DiFranco, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor are a few of Melissa’s musical influences. Her love of DiFranco’s music illustrates Melissa’s support of independent music. She feels a growing momentum in underground music and is excited about the message it brings to listeners. Melissa believes in supporting the people who support her. This homegrown Alaskan is a gem in her community and the people of her state rest assured that she will always keep her home close to heart.
A self-proclaimed country girl, Melissa enjoys performing the songs of
Alma immensely. She feels the songs reflect the phases of growth in her life. The connections she makes while performing live help her reflect on all the songs she’s written and why she gave birth to them. Melissa says much of her music simply comes to her; “it’s a spiritual experience”.
